IOW Holiday -the birding pace picks up

September 27th

With some cloud cover and the wind turning to the SE it was back to St Catherines Point. I was initially checking the bushes but had also noticed an area of muddy ground in a field to the East of the Lighthouse and made a mental note to check it, with all these yankee waders around you just never know. As I approached nothing seemed to be doing on the first scans but there was alot of tussocky veg for birds to hide in. Then when I got closer a previously unseen Common Buzzard flew off the cliff edge and put up a wader that started towering to the West. I was willing the thing back as I already knew it was something good by it's call and relatively long wings. Thankfully it turned round, pitched back in and I was soon enjoying close views of  a smart Juv Pec Sand(Island tick!)

Later a drive along the south coast in amazing warm sunny weather. It was fairly quiet birdwise but large numbers of hirundines were noticable everywhere feeding on a flying ant emergence. Birds seen at Yarmouth Estuary and Pools included 96 Black-tailed Godwit and a Kingfisher

House Martins sunnning themselves on the roof of the Old Yarmouth Mill House
