Some of the best views of Crossbills I have ever had, but even with good views Identification in the Highlands is challenging.
I'm confident that a family group of 5 birds that gave excellent views were Scottish Crossbills
Bill size and shape intermediate between Common and Parrot
A pair of Crossbills seen at another site were presumed to be Parrots with deeper based bills and more abruptly down curving upper mandible.
Good numbers of Tree Pipits back on territory plus Wood Warbler, Redstart and Spotted Flycatcher
The warmth was perfect for butterflies including pearl-bordered fritillary
