I was on holiday but mainly just stuck to the patch at Ferryhills as I'm kinda addicted to it at the moment.
I did the East Neuk on Monday after a bit of an easterly got established but the wind went round too quick and all I saw was a chiffchaff.
I also went off patch on the afternoon of Thursday when in heavy downpours the sensible option seemed to be a seawatch from the car at Kinghorn. This was a good move as a I got a Scottish bogey bird; Black Tern. Somehow I've not come across this species before in Scotland; it's uncommon but fairly reliable in small numbers in the autumn and I was in the weird position of having had White-winged before Black here. Also 1 Pom Skua and 9 Arctic Skua plus a Harbour Porpoise.
Visible migration at Ferryhills has been steady and mainly about Meadow Pipits-I broke the site record with 2,009 through on Thurs and then again today with 2,056. Today was particularly good with the weather conditions coming together to make birds keep low and be easily detected; the headwind strong enough but not too strong to stifle passage, the cloud cover low enough but still with decent visibility. In addition to Mipits it was a really good day for hirundines including over a 1,000 Swallows-very exhilarating to watch flocks whizz by often at ground level.
