The weather has really warmed up and several newly arrived summer migrants to be seen. Personal firsts for the year while working in Dumfries and Galloway last week were Common Sandpiper (16th) and Tree Pipit back on territory (18th). First House Martins were three over the house (19th).
The patch at Ferry Hills still not busy but a few bits and bobs included late winter visitors, Fieldfare, Redwing and Brambling over (19th). The biggest surprise here was a Green Woodpecker (20th), a first for the site. After perching up and yaffling briefly it flew off to the west. Presumably some sort of dispersal/movement. Green Woodies are rather localised as a breeding species in Fife (and Scotland generally) compared to the very common Great Spots.
Today 21st, a good trip out with Derek Robertson in more cracking weather , a tour of Central Fife wetland sites and more migrants. Highlights were single singing Grasshopper Warblers at Rossie Bog and Wilderness, a Little Ringed Plover at the Wilderness that touched down briefly before heading north. Also a beautiful summer p. Black-t Godwit at the Wilderness and single Wheatear at Rossie and Luthrie.
