Survey site near the Clyde turned up a male Hen Harrier, while my first cuckoo of the year contrasted with a tardy Fieldfare. First Green Hairstreak of the year too.
April 21st
East Weymss, Fife
A flock of 38 Whimbrel heading high East over the Forth was a good sized flock to see here. Sitting offshore were a similar range of seafowl to that seen there in March- 2 Black-throated Diver, 6 RTD, 19 Velvet Scoter and 5 Long-tailed Duck. The BTD were the pick of this bunch, now in summer plumage all velvety grey and black and white chequers.
Nearby at West Weymss an impressive flock of 580 Common Scoter, presumably indicative of a spring build up.
April 22nd
Early am at Rossie Bog was fairly QT although at least the water levels are better now. Still a bit on the early side for too many passage waders but a Ringed Plover dropped out of the sky while I was there. Pinkies still moving North-145.
Moved on to Kincraig Point, but no grounded migrants of note. Viz mig included a Bonxie west, Golden Plover East and 29 Mipit and 2 Swallow in off.
After a spot of lunch near Bridge of Earn with the missus (getting a roadside first Orangetip Butterfly of the year) we went to Newburgh, Fife overlooking the Tay. Two White-tailed Eagles were immediately viewable over Mugdrum Island, a second calender yr and a third calender yr. Sightings of eagles from the E Coast reintro scheme are not unusual here but what happened next was pretty special...
Both birds came across the Tay to our side until they were directly overhead, then they were mobbed by a Peregrine. Then they came closer and began swooping over the river and then the 3rd cal bird dropped it's enormous talons and causal as you like plucked a large fish(Salmon?) out of the river. Obviously I had been clicking away since the Peregrine moment but it was only now I noticed the dreaded words-no CF card- on the viewing screen. My wife said it was her best ever birding moment and yes it was right up there for me although I did experience somewhat mixed emotions! A female Marsh Harrier over the Tay reed beds too.
.....and the day still wasn't over. Following news of a Drk Blue-winged Teal at Loch Leven I did some more dirty twitching for the second weekend running. Nice bird and with the CF card back in I even managed some pics.

The closest the bird came was when it did a fly past with some Shoveler -apparently competing for the female. |
