This weekend. First birding in Fife since coming back from the cruise and not without interest.
Saturday
Warm weather and easterlies tempted me up to the East Neuk, felt like there should be a Red-backed Shrike around but a Spotted Flycatcher was the best on offer. It was nice to see an arrival of Painted Lady butterfly with at least 8 observed. Nearby as I was driving on the outskirts of Crail and musing about the Yellow Wagtails that were present before I went away in May, I suddenly noticed a male perched on a sign post near the road. Doubled back, parked up and then observed it hovering in a kind of song flight over the cereal field. Well worth keeping on eye on this as it could well indicate a nesting attempt, something that is rather infrequent in Fife (As far as I can tell the last time was 2001).
Sunday
A watch from Ferryhills without any high expectations. Although it was in the back of my mind that June is a good month for wandering raptors. I was rewarded with a Red Kite flying through giving decent views as it paused to circle over the quarry area before continuing out over the Forth towards Hill End/Dalgety. Only my second in Fife after one from the same location in Nov 2015.
