Friday 7th
Ferryhills produced a site tick in the form of Barnacle Geese, much anticipated for here , particularly after hearing some over my house in September after dark. A flock of 12 birds was followed by a super flock of 80 making their way over the Forth Rail Bridge. Early October is a good time to catch up with Svalbard birds as they migrate over Fife on their way to the Solway Firth. Other standout counts from the Friday morning session were a site record 137 alba wagtails and 106 Redwing.
In the afternoon a visit to the Kilminning area didn't quite live up to expectations but at least there were plenty of common migrants to look through, particularly Goldcrest with at least 50 seen. A scattering of thrushes, Blackcaps, a Whinchat and a fine male Common Redstart were the best on offer. A quick half hour seawatch was productive with 23 Little Gull, 1 Sooty Shearwater, 4 Bonxie amd 1 Arctic Skua seen.
Lots of Goldcrests at Kilminning. |
Good variety on the move again including site records for Pink-footed Goose (1,154), Tree Sparrow (27) and Skylark (81). 65 House Martin were a decent number for Scotland at this time of year, maybe even my last.
