Sunday 14 August 2016

Early morning watches on Saturday and Sunday at Ferryhills; the Tree Pipits just keep on coming. A count of 83 in 2.5 hrs on Sat was impressive enough but then that was topped by an amazing 167 birds in 2.75 hrs on Sunday. This is record British day count as listed on the Trektellen Website with the next highest count involving 125 at Durlston, Dorset on August 27th 2013.
I only started doing this site properly last year and it looks like a large passage of departing Scottish Tree Pipits is a regular event here in August (peak day count of 67 in August 2015) although of course it's detect-ability will vary on year to year depending on the weather conditions. The cloud cover this morning probably helped keep the birds lower and made the regular small groups more visible (largest flock size today was 15). Tree Pipit flight call is distinctive enough once you have got your ear in but actually seeing birds going over can be tricky on bright clear days.

Also yesterday a check of Fife wader sites, firstly at the Wilderness 2 Ruff, 11 Black-tailed Godwit and more unusually for this inland location, 1 Bar-tailed Godwit. At Letham a Greenshank and 3 showy Water Rails were the highlights.

Barwit at the Wilderness was more unusual for this inland location. Tree Pipit video below; not great but you can just make out some calls and a small flock going over at height:
