Ferry Hills-Visible Migration Highlights August 2021

August isn't the best for diversity but its the peak month for the sites speciality, Tree Pipit. Overall, not such big numbers this year, probably down to frequent suboptimal weather for concentrating movement (lots of light E to NE winds). But an impressive 221 on 16th cemented the sites reputation as the best in the UK for this species on migration.

Other highlights:

Ruddy Shelduck. Angus Jennings gripped me off with four flying W up the Forth on 1st, a new species for the site list.

Long-tailed Skua. A lovely dark Juv lingering over the Forth, excellent comparison alongside 2 Juv Arctic Skua.

Arctic Skua. A decent monthly total of 32 and good to note a high proportion of Juvs for this declining species.

Sandwich Tern. 1046 out E from roost on 7th was the second highest count for the site.

Green Sandpiper. One flying over on the 13th was only the second record.

Good numbers of Arctic Skuas heading overland up the Forth. I've seen this plenty of times now but it's always a special sight.
