 Spring  2022

Have been trying a new spot for vis mig on the Forth along the Coastal Path at Kinghorn this spring. The nearby Kirkcaldy area has had some interesting historical records of birds moving along this part of the coast in the spring such as Crane, Spoonbill, numerous Osprey and even a Hoopoe.

Ferry Hills is less productive in the spring compared with autumn and my theory was that birds take a more direct route off the Lothian coast towards the prominent point at Kinghorn. I've certainly had a few nice birds that seem to validate that theory..

The fine sight of 2 Cranes coming north across the Forth on 12th March

One of three Ospreys crossing the Forth on 9th April.

I also had a fine male Hen Harrier in off and north on May 6th, while interest hasn't been limited to large birds with passerine migrants including Grasshopper Warbler, Wheatear and Lesser Whitethroat.

Kinghorn is traditionally know as a productive autumn seawatching site but less so in spring, but I managed the fine sight of dark Pomarine Skua heading east on 15th May with a flock of 52 Manx  Shearwater the previous day.
