Last Thurs I was working from home so manged a bit of time early morning locally with some vis migging. Not at Carlingnose Point though, a new site nearby that I've had my eye on. Ferryhill is basically the high ground just inland from Carlingnose/N Queensferry. You get a really commanding view looking Northwards into Fife as well as NE to SW along the Forth Coastline/Forth Valley. Figured that on days that were best for passage of small birds- finches/thrushes this would be a good place as alot of small stuff seems to follow the high ground behind me when I'm at Carlingnose.
It was a promising first watch with a locally scarce Little Egret arriving from the North, landing briefly, before continuing West. Amongst a good variety of other visible migrants were 4 Brambling, 5 Crossbill, 17 Mistle Thrush and 330 Pink-footed Geese.
On Sat I visited Barns Ness, Lothian in balmy almost summer like conditions with several Red Admirals on the wing. A good scatter of migrant Blackbird, Song Thrush and Robin, as well as 3 Blackcap and a Chiffchaff.
Sunday morning saw me back at Ferryhill for a another Vis mig watch with good variety again. Some decent flocks of Fieldfare, often passing the watch point at low level was a particularly fine sight.
Sunday afternoon and another visit to the East Neuk, trying to make the most of the autumn before it comes to a close. At Kilminning a light scatter of thrushes and 2 Brambling included a very smart male showing well at the entrance. Down at the seaward end a brown and buff chiffchaff was in the same area as last weeks interesting Lesser Whitethroat. It proved difficult to get to grips with feeding very actively and attempts to photo it were made tricky by the failing light. It did look promising for a Siberian.
