Yesterday..
Met up with my mate JD for a look around Barns Ness in the morning. It was an enjoyable walk and catch up, but birding wise hard work again. We missed out on a Wryneck seen at the Wire Dump, and the pick of our sightings were a Yellow Wagtail going over, 5 White Wagtail and 5 Whimbrel. A few Swift were moving along the coast (Saw my first of the year the day before).
JD had an afternoon engagement, but as the missus was expecting us to be out all day I was allowed the PM for birding time as well! At this point the phrase 'glutton for punishment' springs to mind, but I convinced myself that with the sun coming out a few migrants might start to show themselves. So next up the Fife coast at Kilminning. Once again no big arrival but a few migrants were about.
The real highlight was a cracking Wood Warbler. One of those nice little surprise moments, I was watching a Willow Warbler when it just appeared alongside it. A really bright contrasting one that stood out like a sore thumb next to Willow. Before I could even think about pictures it dropped out of view and vanished into thin air. There are plenty of places you can find breeding Wood Warblers on the W coast of Scotland and in the Highlands, but this is a scarce bird on the E coast. Funnily enough I had been talking to Will Cresswell, a Fife Ness/Crail regular before hand and he had one earlier in the week nearby at Fife Ness. This was the first one he had in the that area in about 8 years.
Also present were a male Pied Flycatcher and 2 Spotted Fly's.
Today at Letham 1 LRP.
