Today
A look round a few wetland sites in Fife didn't produce much out of the ordinary although this hybrid Aythya duck was at Letham. One of it's parents is clearly a Pochard but what about the other one? Illustrations in the Collins guide of Pochard x  Ferruginous Duck look similar to this bird...

The breast was dark reddish brown and sharply demarcated from the grey flanks. The crown is high peaked in this pic.

Looks flatter headed here but has just come up from a dive so feathers may be sleeked down. Eye was yellow. Bill pattern very Pochard like.



More distant but giving off a jzz that is quite like Ferruginous Duck; long thin bill and very high peaked crown.
