Ferry Hills, The Final Autumn Watches.
Nothing was going to match the excitement of the Woodlark but migration has been steady well into November. Highlights included a continuation of the excellent autumn for Bramblings with 56 on 15th and the only Twite of the autumn the same day. Overland passage of Kittiwake was prominent on 16th with 165 heading inland at height in very calm weather. Typical weather and time of year for Kittiwakes to do this but always a fine spectacle to see flocks spiralling up high into the sky, even more so when one of the flocks also contained 5 Little Gull,a much more unusual species to see migrating overland here.
The weekend of the 17th,18th saw very large numbers of Red-throated Diver. This species often migrates overland to the west here, but something about the conditions was making most birds U-turn. An impressive 306 birds were counted on 17th along with 2 GN Diver.
I made what will likely be my final visit to FH this year today, 25th. My expectations were not high this late in the season with a few odds and ends including some large flocks of Woodpigeon crossing the Forth but I was able to reflect on an excellent autumn at the site.
