Hawfinches
The site has established itself as a bit of a hotspot for migrant Hawfinch in the autumn. This is my third consecutive autumn with records here. A single bird flew through to the SW on the 27th and then the next day one was located feeding on the deck on Whitebeam berries. This was almost certainly a different bird as the bird on the first day flew straight through.
About the 15th Hawfinch I've had here, but the first I've managed to see perched |
Skua day September 29th.
My best day for skuas since I started watching here with a total of 45 Arctic Skua (most birds flying inland, the largest flock of 11), 3 Juv Long-tailed Skua (2 dark and 1 intermediate) heading inland with Arctic Skuas.
Only 1 Pom (pale adult) but any day with a Pom is a good day, and 2 Bonxie. It wasn't only skuas though with other species including 151 Red-throated Diver heading inland.
More skuas and Kittiwakes October 1st
A brief but productive session before work saw two fine Ad Pom Skuas lingering offshore (dark and light with spoons) and a little gull heading inland with a flock of 150 Kittiwake. Also a merlin flew south over the Forth. Dave Heeley took over when I had to leave and added 5 Pom Skuas and more Kittiwakes heading inland to bring the morning total to 670.
Hen Harrier October 2nd
Just as I was walking off site, a lovely Juv Hen Harrier flew through low to the SW.
