Down in Dumfries and Galloway last week again and a great week for all round natural history. Insects were making the most of some very hot weather with butterflies including Large and Small Heaths and Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary. Lots of Golden Ringed Dragonflies and a spectacular Northern Eggar Moth was found resting in some grass.
Bird highlights were male Black Grouse,  Wood Warbler, close views of Short-eared Owl and 3 Buzzard chicks. Not forgetting the ever present but always awesome Red Kites.

Meanwhile on the garden lawn at Dunfermline. The human race has a strange obsession with cutting vegetation to within an inch of it's life (all about having control over everything I guess) but this is what can happen if you leave a patch uncut. I know which I prefer..
